Variations Audio Timeliner Version 1.0.2 Installation Instructions
for Mac OS X

Prerequisites

Hardware:

- Pentium II 500MHz, 256MB RAM (512MB preferred), 2GB hard drive or better, 16-bit audio, 1024x768 resolution

Software:

- Mac OS X
- QuickTime 7.0 or higher

NOTE: As of Yosemite (OS X 10.10), Apple no longer includes Quicktime for Java with Quicktime. You will need to find a pre-Yosemite Mac and follow the instructions linked here before the timeliner will work.

Step 1. Install the Variations Audio Timeliner

  1. Download Variations Audio Timeliner to your desktop.
  2. When the file finishes downloading, you will see an install disk image (an icon of a disk called "Variations Audio Timeliner"); open it to begin the installation.
  3. In the install disk image is the program, an application also called "Variations Audio Timeliner"; drag it to where you would like it to be installed--usually the Applications folder.
  4. Drag the Sample Timelines folder from the disk image to your desktop. Open the Sample Timelines folder. Double-click the sample timeline (Chopin_Nocturne_op27no2.v2t) in that folder to start the application and display the sample timeline. Click on the play button to listen to the audio.

Step 2. Configure Web Browser(s)

In order for Variations Audio Timeliner to work properly when links are clicked from web browsers, you must follow the instructions below for each web browser installed on your system.

Firefox

Firefox does not allow setting of file/mime types ahead of time, and so you must "teach" the browser to recognize files by first clicking on them in the browser. For each file type (v2t timelines), the first time you click on a link to one of these files, a pop-up dialog will ask which application you wish to use to open files of this type. For each file, choose Variations Audio Timeliner. Here are some sample files you can use to do all this configuration at one time.

Test Firefox configuration with samples from the samples page

Mozilla

Start Mozilla and choose Preferences from the Mozilla menu. Choose File Helpers and add new mime type 'application/x-variations2-timeline'. You should associate 'application/x-variations2-timeline' with file type v2t.

Safari

Use of Safari is not currently recommended for accessing Variations Audio Timeliner. If using Safari, you must manually download files to your hard drive, then double-click on the file in the Finder to launch the application. This is true for v2t files.
